Basic Forex Terminology



Pip

Pip refers to the smallest upward or downward price movements quoted in forex.

Swaps

The swap, also known as rollover is the interest paid or earned for holding a position overnight.

Standard Lot

A standard lot is the equivalent to 100,000 units of the base currency in a forex trade.

Mini Lot

A mini lot is the equivalent to 10,000 units of the base currency in a forex trade.

Micro Lot

A micro lot is the equivalent to 1,000 units of the base currency in a forex trade.

Leverage

Leverage allows you to control larger trade sizes using very little of your own money.

Margin

Margin is the capital required to open and maintain your open positions.

Margin Call

A margin call is a warning message that occurs when your equity is too low to support margin requirements.

Stop Out Level

When your equity falls below 50% of the margin required your positions will be automatically closed.

Equity

The equity is your account balance plus the floating profit/loss of your open positions.

Expert Advisors (EAs)

EAs are automated programs developed to trade on your behalf.

Spread

The spread is the difference between the 'Bid' and 'Ask' quotes.
